Location

Although La Surprise is located in the beautiful countryside, we are only 10 minutes by car from Belves and Monpazier, both being amongst the most important villages in the Dordogne. Monpazier is recognised as the best-preserved “Bastide”(fortified town) in the whole of  France. Also within half  an hours drive are, famous villages, markets and Chateaux. Market days are held weekly in many fine village settings and offer a good insight to local produce (Foie gras, walnuts, preserved duck, sausage, pates and strawberries).

The river Dordogne is only minutes away. In summer the river offers canoeing (safe and great fun). Swimming in crystal clear water, certified as one of  the cleanest in France, fishing and good access along its banks to beaches, cafes etc.

At La Surprise we hold detailed information on all local facilities.

What's in the area?

La Surprise is close to a wide range of attractions including:

Monpazier:

A lovely Bastide Village, founded in 1284, by Edward I of England, this is a must see for the area.

In the centre of the village is a beautiful square surrounded by places to eat, bars and shops selling local produce.

More than 30 of the buildings in Monpazier are classified as ‘national monuments’, and there is little to spoil the impression that all is much as it has been for the last 700 years.

Beynac-et-Cazenac:

Great place to visit. Take a boat trip from here up the Dordogne River to really appreciate the river, surrounding countryside and some of the lovely Chateaux around the area.

The village of Beynac below the chateau, also served as a location for the film Chocolat, in 2000. Now watch the film again and appreciate why this stunning location was chosen

If you are lucky you might see one of the many the Hot Air balloons that fly across the area.

The area is so stunning a flight by balloon  is a lovely way to really appreciate the landscape and surrounding countryside

Sarlat la Caneda:

Probably ones of the most popular places in the area.

Beautiful medieval town in local honey-coloured sandstone is probably the most visited town for its famous market at the weekend.

Huge food market in the main square will offer everything from string’s of onions and garlic, through to Foie Gras, truffles, gorgeous French cheeses, olives and local sausages!!

Full of lovely restaurants and bars and worth visiting on market day or for an evening to remember.

Domme:

Great hill top village with spectacular views across the valley and the River Dordogne!

Wander the quiet village street, take a break for a coffee or glass of wine and watch the world wander past.

The caves, below the village main square, have been used in the past to shelter the town’s inhabitants during the Hundred Years’ War, though the upper part was only discovered in 1954.

There are more than 400m of stalactite-filled galleries and a glass lift takes you back up to the surface. A wonderful cool place to explore in the summer months.
